Today (5/21) has been a quiet day so far. After breakfast we went to get some things out of the container and go through our therapy materials and get organized while Dr. Weaver and Dr. Tullos went to teach class. Kaylee got sick this morning and has been throwing up so I have been Nurse Lacey and taking care of her! Poor thing! She is actually napping with a cold rag on her head right now. Bless her heart! Pray that she gets better soon and that it is just something she ate. After organizing our materials we have all just been reading books, writing thank you cards, organizing our Itunes and pictures, and taking naps. So now that I have an extended amount of free time, I will try to catch you up on what has been going on. It has been really nice just to relax in the house today. We do not start therapy at the Haven until Monday, but we are going to go visit the children after lunch today and give them some love. I am excited about starting on Monday and know Gods plan is in motion for our team at the Haven.

The internet here is really iffy. It goes in and out quite often. It is so funny to see all of us girls in the living room sitting right next to each other groaning and conversing about the internet and competing to see who has best service and who doesn’t. haha. Hopefully they will get it up and running soon. One of the men working out here on the mission said he was going to try to move the router over here to our house….so hopefully we will have a stronger signal in a couple of days. For now, we have been “blogging” on a word document and uploading it when the internet is actually working. I haven’t been able to check my email or facebook in a while either so if you have sent me something and I have not responded it is because we do not have internet.
Because ATT doesn’t have a cheap plan for traveling to Zambia, I am charged 3.49 per minute. Needless to say I haven’t made any calls so far. Not even to my parents. The text message plan I got is 50 texts for 10 dollars a month and any text over 50 is 10 cents per text! INSANE! So, I have been using the internet to email my parents when I can and also got Will to call them for me. Thank goodness I have texting and a way to communicate while the internet is out though. Even if the texts are a bit expensive. Blogging (or having a date with Microsoft word) has become the nightly ritual around here for everyone too.
The weather is absolutely AMAZING here. It is a tad chilly in the mornings and you need a light weight jacket when walking to breakfast, but around noon it gets a warmer. The temperature here is about 65 degrees every day. It feels sooooo good. It is not too hot and not too cold and there is always a nice breeze. The sky is THE MOST beautiful thing you have ever seen! I have been taking tons of pictures of just sky. Ha. It’s the prettiest bright blue color with hugeeeee puffy clouds. Looks like cotton balls all over the sky like something you would see in a magazine. You can tell it is much less polluted than America. I love it!!
I am beginning to be spoiled by the beautiful weather and somewhat dread going back to Arkansas weather!
We experienced two power outages last night. The electricity, just like the internet is a come and go thing that you begin to get used to. We were all excited to get to use our head lamps for the first time. Haha. This was a really funny sight and of course we found humor in the situation. Also, every other day or so the mission shuts off the energy during the morning hours to conserve energy and save money. Such a good idea! We have big windows and it is so nice outside that it is really not needed. It is so nice just living the simple life. I was really scared before coming over here that I would be roughing it. But, I actually enjoy it. No cell phones ringing. no tvs. Just good company and a LITTLE BIT of internet every now and then is all that I need!
Because of the lack of energy and internet, we have all decided to start a “book club”. We all brought five or so books and have placed them all out on the book shelf in the hall for everyone to read whatever they would like. I have actually started reading all the Twilights because I have never read them like almost every other girl in the world… but I HAVE seen the movies. Don’t hate. Haha. I also brought 3 Chelsea Handler books when I need a good laugh. HILARIOUS!!!
Also, Caroline, our swallowing specialist has started a Zumba class at night on the front porch of our house! She is awesome and so energetic! Just love her! I did not participate last night and instead decided to skype and catch up on blogging since the internet was actually working! Woo hoo! I was sad I didn’t get to add more pictures from yesterday (from market and other adventures) and might add some more later if the internet will cooperate with me! So I hope you enjoyed the few pics that I actually got uploaded. I plan on joining the “zumba club” tonight though. We have Jaime’s Ipod dock, so we can play the music over the speakers. It is the funniest thing EVER to see 7 girls in the middle of the living room and porch doing crazy Zumba dances. Haha. I can tell I will be making up a lot of my own dance moves, that’s for sure. Pretty intense! Walking everywhere on the mission, along with doing zumba and exercising at night should make us all be in a lot better shape when we arrive home after six weeks! (well hopefully if we don’t eat too much of Leonard’s amazing food!!!) Also, we should each come home with nice tans being out in the sun a lot of the day as well too! Yay!
The meals here have been GREAT. Leonard, our cook, has been trained to cook American style. For our first breakfast we had French toast and fruit. Our first dinner consisted of homemade fried chicken, green beans, mashed potatoes and gravy, and a roll. Lunch was homemade pizza, salad, and garlic bread…..and of course a dessert or cake of some kind. Leonard is a fabulous cook! So, needless to say we are definitely getting enough to eat! We are all so thankful for Leonard and his willingness to prepare such awesome meals for us every day. We will not need as many snacks as we thought and will probably leave a lot of them behind at the Haven for the kids…or at the college for the students there to enjoy. It is soooo nice to have 3 meals prepared for us each day. No cooking or cleaning. Two sweet little ladies come in every couple of days and clean our house and also do our laundry. It is so nice! AHHH. I could get used to this kind of treatment! ;) haha.
This morning I woke up to two mosquitos caught in my net over my bed. Thank goodness for those nets! Kaylee and I take turns tucking each other into our nets at night. Haha. It is kind of tricky to get it all tucked under the mattresses in order to “secure the surroundings”. We get a KICK out of it and always find the humor in the “situation” when we find huge eight legged friends around our room. Dr. Weaver has assured us that they are “Wall spiders” but we have seen those little guys boogying across the floors and bathtubs. EEEEK! Us trying to kill them should probably be put on YouTube because it takes us probably a solid couple of minutes just to “assess the situation” and get the courage to grab a shoe or whatever other smooshing device we can find. I know in a couple of days we will be completely used to bugs crawling everywhere, but for now we are still a little startled when one of those big guys is spotted.
This after noon we went to the haven. I was so excited to get to spend some QT with the babies! I spent my first hour or so at Haven 1 which is an orphan's home with AIDS and TB children. I then moved to Haven 2 with the toddlers. They were so active and sweet! I am already in loveeee! Only had one "situation" while I was there today. . . I got peed on! Because they use cloth diapers here and because there are a large amount of children and not enough caregivers, the children have to wait their turn to be changed, bathed, and fed. The children were all so thirsty for attention and reached their arms up to me any chance they got. My heart just MELTED!!! Im excited to get to spend so much time here with them.
